Chipmaking equipment supplier Lam Research reported a record quarter on Wednesday evening. The next day its shares fell 11.64%, and all 30 members of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index went down with it.
The selloff was not triggered by the earnings figures but by a side remark from CFO Doug Bettinger about December guidance. "Would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints."
The index fell 6.72% to its lowest level since July 29. The Nasdaq Composite lost 2.60% and the S&P 500 1.21%, while the Dow rose 0.02%.
What Lam Research Reported
Revenue rose 54.4% year over year to $8.22 billion, beating the $8.14 billion estimate by 1.0%. Adjusted earnings per share of $2.20 came in just above expectations. The site's earnings analysis has the details.
December-quarter revenue guidance of $8.60 billion beats the estimate by only 0.7%. Bettinger did not quantify the shortfall. He said those orders will ship in the March quarter and that constraints will persist next year.
CEO Tim Archer named two limits for 2027: clean-room space and the supply of certain components. In his view they will curb the ability of chipmakers and equipment companies to fully meet end demand.
Why Excess Demand Sank the Stock
The market did not read the comment as a demand story. It read it as a speed limit.
A growth stock is priced less on whether sales are lost than on how fast they grow. Lam's own numbers made the ceiling on that pace visible for the first time.
Lam's problem did not stay with one company. Tools are the first link in the chain: a machine not shipped today is a production line not running in 2027.
That line would have made memory, processors or AI chips. That is why the selling spread from equipment makers to chipmakers such as Nvidia, AMD and Micron.
The Selling Was Concentrated in One Corner
Intraday moves show where the pressure went. In the morning AMD and Marvell were down 8%, Intel 7% and Applied Materials 6%.
The demand side was questioned the same day. Meta fell 6.98% the day after earnings in which capital spending exceeded its operating cash flow. ICE data show its five-year credit default swap spread rose intraday to 119.3 basis points, a record.
By StockTitan's midday calculation, 93% of the Nasdaq 100's net loss in value up to that point came from 26 companies. They were 22 chip, equipment and storage companies plus four large cloud companies.
The chart shows the past month. The Nasdaq Composite set a record close on October 6; Thursday's drop came on top of the decline since that peak.
The Part That Doesn't Fit
The bond market showed no sign of panic. The 10-year yield eased to 4.95% and the fund tracking the Russell 2000 closed flat. The selling was concentrated in tech-heavy names rather than the broad market.
Archer rejected comparisons with the pandemic-era parts crisis. "This is nothing like that." Bettinger added that suppliers are well capitalized enough to carry the load on their own.
So the orders are not lost; they are queuing. On Thursday the market priced that queue without knowing how long it is.
What It Means for Investors
- The market priced a cap on growth speed rather than lost shipments; Lam's statement that demand is shifting to the March quarter does not yet look priced in.
- Equipment makers such as Lam, Applied Materials and KLA are being repriced on delivery pace, chipmakers on the capacity that can be built in 2027.
- SK Hynix's call on October 28, Microsoft's guidance the same day and Amazon's on October 29 will show where demand and its financing are heading.
- The risk to this view is that the constraint lasts longer than Archer expects and 2027 shipments also slip into the following year.
For gauging stock reactions on days like this, the guides on expected move and valuation are a good starting point.
