Stock-Based Compensation (SBC)

Filings & Insiders

Paying employees partly in restricted stock units (RSUs) or stock options.

Under US accounting standards (GAAP) it is recorded as an expense, but since no cash leaves the company it is added back to net income in the cash flow statement, and many companies exclude it from their adjusted earnings. Its cost reaches shareholders as dilution, which is why companies often try to offset it with buybacks.
