TSMC Beat Its Own Revenue Guidance, and Its US Shares Fell 3%
Thursday, October 86 Min Read
TSMC's September sales lifted third-quarter revenue to $46.7B, above the company's own range. The same day, OpenAI's revenue report pulled TSMC down along with Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron, leaving margin as the open question for Oct. 15.

TSMC reported September sales on Oct. 8, after the Taiwan market closed: NT$511.9 billion, or about $16B. That was 54.6% higher than a year earlier.
September came in just 0.6% below August and was the company's second-best month on record. Analysts had expected NT$444.8 billion to NT$483.2 billion for the month.
The same day, TSMC's New York-listed shares fell 3.01% to close at $457.99.
Three Months Added Up Reveal the Quarter
TSMC reports sales every month. Add July, August and September, and quarterly revenue is known a week before earnings day. Figures are converted at roughly NT$32 per dollar.
| Item | Reported | Expected | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| July | $14.6B | — | — |
| August | $16.1B | — | +10.1% month on month |
| September | $16.0B | $13.9B-$15.1B | -0.6% month on month |
| Third quarter | $46.7B | $44.6B-$45.8B (company) · $45.6B (LSEG, 19 analysts) | 2% above top of range |
Nine-month revenue rose 41.1% year over year. Taiwan's Central News Agency attributed the quarter to AI demand and inventory building ahead of new smartphone launches.
The segment breakdown, the split by process node and margins arrive on Oct. 15 (How to Read Earnings Day). Monthly sales data includes none of them.
Two Numbers Arrived on the Same Day
On Oct. 8, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI's annualized revenue was below what the company had previously signaled (details). The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.39% that day.
TSMC's drop almost matched the index's. Sources cite no TSMC-specific reason for selling; the company's own record did not show up in the price.
The market did not read TSMC's number as demand news. It read it as an invoice for the past.
A chip takes months to go from a foundry order to delivery. TSMC's September invoice reflects decisions its customers made months ago. OpenAI's revenue run rate shows what those chips earn today.
The market put the second ahead of the first. If revenue at the end of the chain is weak, orders at the start eventually adjust to it.
Taiwan's stock market was closed on Oct. 9. TSMC's local shares had closed Oct. 8 down 1.35% before the number came out, so their first reaction comes in the next session.
On Oct. 15, Margin Is the Only Unknown
With revenue already known, any surprise on earnings day will come from margin. TSMC guided to a 65%-67% gross margin in July. In the second quarter it was 67.7%.
LSEG puts analysts' net income estimate at about $23.2B (NT$740.8 billion), up 64% year over year. That estimate assumes margin stays in the upper half of the range.
The past month of the Nasdaq 100 frames the index-level selling in AI hardware.
What It Means for Customers and Rivals
Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom make their most advanced chips at TSMC. The September invoice shows their orders have not slowed. Analysts expect fourth-quarter growth from Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform and 2-nanometer production.
On the rival side, Samsung's foundry unit is estimated to have lost about $0.75B in the third quarter (Samsung story). Demand for leading-edge manufacturing flows to one address.
What It Means for Investors
- The market did not price the revenue record; on Oct. 8 it sold TSMC as much as the chip index that fell on the OpenAI report.
- For Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom, TSMC's September invoice shows orders continue; the question is end-user revenue, not orders.
- If gross margin comes in near 65% on Oct. 15, the revenue beat will not reach profit; fourth-quarter guidance arrives the same day.
- The one risk that would break the thesis: weak end-user revenue feeding into 2027 order plans.
