Diversification

Market Mechanics

Diversification means spreading money across many assets that do not move together, so that one company's or sector's bad run hurts the portfolio less.

It greatly reduces company-specific risk but does not remove the risk that hits the whole market at once. Ten stocks in one sector diversify far less than ten stocks across different sectors.
