Year over Year (YoY)

Earnings Season

Year over year compares a period's figure with the same period a year earlier.

For quarterly results, this quarter is compared with the same quarter last year. Because each season is compared with itself, seasonal effects, such as holiday shopping lifting the fourth quarter every year, largely cancel out.

Example

If revenue was $100 million in last year's third quarter and $120 million in this year's third quarter, revenue grew 20% year over year.
