Energy Breaks Away as Oil Jumps and Most Sectors Slide

Sector Funds, Daily Change %, Oct 23

What It Shows

On Oct 23, 8 of 11 sector funds closed lower, and Energy was the clear outlier, rising 2.60%. The crude oil fund gained 4.32%, while SLB jumped 7.08% after earnings that beat estimates; Halliburton and Devon were also among the day's top gainers. Defensive Consumer Staples took the hardest hit at -1.92%, with Communication Services down 1.78% and Consumer Discretionary down 1.66%. Technology held up with a 0.49% gain, which kept the Nasdaq 100 roughly flat even as the Dow fell 1.24%. Only 26.5% of stocks across the major-index universe advanced. Whether oil can hold this jump in the coming sessions will show if Energy's breakaway has staying power.
