AMD reported the largest quarter in its history on Tuesday evening. Revenue rose 45% from a year earlier to $13.38B, and data center sales nearly doubled.
The stock closed the regular session up 3.7% at $483.90. After the release, it traded up 8.4% at $524 in after-hours trading as of 4:36 p.m. ET.
The cash flow statement in the same release tells a different story. Free cash flow for the quarter was $554M, down from $1.53B a year earlier.
Revenue Beat, and the Guidance Beat by More
Analysts expected revenue of $13.09B and adjusted earnings of $1.95 per share. AMD earned $2.09 per share, and data center revenue rose 97% to $8.55B.
The guidance did most of the work for the stock. AMD expects fourth-quarter revenue of $17B, plus or minus 3%, implying 66% annual and 27% sequential growth.
Lisa Su said growth would accelerate as production of Helios racks and Venice processors scales. Per the release, Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle are already running models on the first Helios racks.
The chart shows the slide from the $649 close on October 6 to the earnings report. On earnings day, the stock sat 25% below that level.
Profit Rose, Cash Coming In Fell
Adjusted operating income rose 75% to $3.92B. In the same quarter, operating cash flow fell to $1.20B, from $2.37B in the second quarter.
Third-Quarter Free Cash Flow
The market read this report as a growth story. The cash flow statement shows the cost of an investment phase.
Where the Money Went: Inventory
A single line explains the gap between profit and cash: AMD added about $3B to inventory in the quarter. The cash flow guide explains how the calculation is built.
Inventory rose from $7.92B at the start of the year to $11.46B. Total debt also jumped from $3.23B to $7.08B in a single quarter.
This may be a timing issue rather than a weakness. AMD expects $3.6B more revenue in the fourth quarter, and the chips, memory and parts for those racks must be bought in advance.
An Expense That Grows With the Share Price
The second item weighing on GAAP profit is a $1.10B change in warrant fair value, or $0.66 per share. The release says it comes from remeasuring, each quarter, the warrants issued to certain customers.
The release names no customer. The largest known warrant is the 160 million-share grant AMD gave OpenAI in its October 2025 deal; secondary reports say Meta received a similar one.
The charge uses no cash, but it can dilute existing shareholders. The higher the stock climbs, the more AMD's GAAP profit is depressed, and this line did not exist in the second quarter.
What It Means for Investors
- The market priced the $17B guidance and 97% data center growth; it did not react after hours to the 64% drop in free cash flow.
- The $3B added to AMD's inventory amounts to orders already placed with suppliers of rack parts, while Nvidia competes directly for the same customers.
- The threshold to watch is the early-February 2027 report: if inventory falls below $11.46B and free cash flow tops $1.5B, shipments have turned into cash.
- The risk that would break the thesis is a Helios delay; inventory would sit idle and the 55% fourth-quarter gross margin guidance would come under pressure.
Revenue, profit, cash flow, inventory and debt figures come from AMD's November 3, 2026 earnings release. Analyst expectations are based on Reuters and LSEG data. The after-hours price and the October 6 comparison follow the measure used in the site's AMD earnings analysis. The OpenAI warrant is from the October 2025 AMD-OpenAI announcement; the Meta warrant rests on secondary reports. The earnings call was still under way when this piece was written.
