Free Float

Market Mechanics

Free float is the part of a company's shares that can trade freely in the market; shares held by executives, founders, strategic holders or under selling restrictions are excluded.

Indexes such as the S&P 500 weight companies by this floating share count. Stocks with a small float have limited supply and can be more volatile.
