Short Squeeze

Market Mechanics

A short squeeze happens when a heavily shorted stock rises and short sellers are forced to buy shares back to cut their losses, and that buying pushes the price even higher.

Short interest as a percentage of the float, and days to cover (short interest divided by average daily volume), are the usual gauges of the risk. In the US, short interest data is published twice a month, so it is never real time.
