Marvell Targets Tenfold Revenue Growth by 2031, Lifting Broadcom

Tuesday, October 66 Min Read

At its October 6 investor day, Marvell set a fiscal 2031 revenue target of $70-90 billion, against Wall Street estimates of $45-47 billion. The target also lifted Broadcom, Arista, Astera Labs and Credo, which sell to the same customers.

Marvell's revenue last fiscal year was $8.2 billion.

On Tuesday the company said it aims for $70 billion to $90 billion five years from now. The midpoint is $80 billion. Roughly ten times larger.

Wall Street's estimate for the same year was around $45-47 billion.

What Marvell Sells

Marvell grows on two kinds of products.

The first is custom silicon. Cloud companies such as Google and Amazon design their own AI chips instead of buying Nvidia's off-the-shelf processors. Marvell's biggest rival in this business is Broadcom.

The second is connectivity. When thousands of chips work on the same job, the data moving between them runs over fiber-optic links and the signal processors that drive them. Marvell is one of the largest makers of those processors.

Last year 75% of the company's revenue came from data centers. Within that slice, 70% was connectivity and 30% compute.

What Is Inside the Target

The company split its $80 billion scenario into three parts.

  • Connectivity · $37.5B%47
  • Custom silicon · $30B%38
  • Other · $12.5B%15

The interim custom target also rose: above $12 billion for fiscal 2029, up from $10 billion.

Margins came with it. For fiscal 2031 Marvell targets a 56-59% gross margin, a 44-46% operating margin and a free cash flow margin above 36%. It plans to return more than half of free cash flow to shareholders.

CFO Dan Durn described demand this way, according to Investing.com: "the global AI infrastructure buildout is continuing at a massive scale and speed."

The Market Did Not Read This as Marvell News

It read it as its customers' spending plan.

According to reports, Marvell's presentation assumes $3 trillion of data center investment by 2030. The four big U.S. cloud companies will spend that money, and Marvell sells to all four.

So the target was priced like a target for everyone selling to the same customers.

The Math Behind the Target

The quickest way to read a target like this is to ask two questions. How much of the market does it assume? And how much of that revenue reaches profit?

The share price rests on that leverage. If the target holds, profit grows fast. If revenue falls short, the same leverage works in reverse.

The Part That Does Not Fit

These figures are management targets, not orders.

The width of the range is itself information. The $20 billion gap between the low and high ends is 2.4 times last year's revenue.

According to reports, the company has raised its fiscal 2028 target five times in about a year. A year ago that figure was around $13 billion. Frequent increases show strong demand; they also show the target is not a firm commitment.

Sources gave the day's move as anywhere from 4% to 10%, mixing up the intraday high and the close. The close-to-close gain was 5.81%, to $287.01.
