Chip Stocks Fall as Much as 7% After AI Leaders Urge a Slowdown
Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei published a roughly 3,800-word essay on Saturday. One sentence sits at its center: "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models."
Amodei is arguing for a slower pace, not a halt. He lays out three proposals: internal lab access for outside evaluators, common safety standards, and coordinated global limits on progress.
OpenAI's Sam Altman joined the same day. He backed pacing the frontier, said it does not mean stopping, and committed OpenAI to matching the independent-evaluator access. Elon Musk wrote one line: "Dario is right."
The market did not read this as a safety debate. It read it as a capital-spending story.
The reaction landed on the chip side in premarket trading. Marvell and SK Hynix fell 7%, CoreWeave, SanDisk, Intel and AMD 6%, Micron and Super Micro 5%. Nvidia and Broadcom held their losses to 2-3%.
