BUYCorning lifted third-quarter core sales 19% to $5.08 billion. Core EPS beat the estimate by 3.4%, and fourth-quarter EPS guidance came in 5.4% above market expectations. The stock is flat anyway, as investors weigh a roughly $2 billion capex plan and how long AI demand will last.

How to Read the Chart
The blue band is the company's low-high range; its length shows how much room the company left itself. The black triangle and the line beneath it mark where the market expected, and the notch in the band is the range's midpoint. The triangle appears only where a market expectation is known. When the company gave a single number rather than a range and no market expectation is known, that row gets no band at all: there is no length to measure and no position to compare. Axis is ±5.9% around the midpoint.

Summary and Review
Summary
Corning's core sales rose 18.9% year over year to $5.08 billion. The market expected $5.03 billion, so the 1.0% beat keeps the revenue gate in line. Core EPS came in at $0.91, beating the $0.88 estimate by 3.4%. The midpoint of fourth-quarter EPS guidance is $0.98, 5.4% above expectations. Sales guidance is in line with expectations. The earnings and guidance gates are open. The company also beat its own third-quarter EPS range of $0.85 to $0.89.
The stock rose about 3% in premarket trading, then fell as low as $121.75 during the session. As of 12:37 p.m. ET it trades 0.3% below the prior close. The market did not read this report as a growth story; it read it as a capex story. The company plans roughly $2 billion of capital spending in 2026. The stock sits about 50% below its record close of $255.69 on June 29.
The score is 74, with a buy view. Optical Communications now carries 46.8% of sales and grew 44% year over year. Core operating margin rose to 22.7% from 19.6% a year earlier. There are caveats: Glass Innovations shrank 3.5%, and the Solar segment lost $7 million. These two lines keep the score in the middle of its band. The in-line revenue result also prevents a score above 80. On the decision table, one gate is in line and two are open, which maps to the 70-79 band.
Full Review
Optical Communications drives the growth.
Optical Communications sales reached $2.38 billion. That is a 44% increase year over year. Segment net income rose 80% to $532 million. Enterprise network sales grew 84%. Sales of generative AI products more than doubled in a year. Carrier sales grew only 4%, with data center interconnect providing the gain. During the quarter Corning signed four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements, including Verizon and AT&T. On the earnings call, Weeks said the data center interconnect opportunity is bigger than the previously stated $1 billion target. Today's demand comes from scale-out networks that link GPUs across a cluster. According to the earnings call, scale-up architectures could lift fiber per GPU from 16 to 160. The company expects that shift to accelerate in 2028.
Margins widen, and cash grows too.
Core gross margin was 40.5%. A year earlier it was 39.0%, a 1.5-point gain. Core operating margin widened 3.1 points to 22.7%. Expenses grew more slowly than sales. Core ROIC was 16.7%, up from 13.4% a year earlier. Adjusted free cash flow was $661 million, up 23.6% year over year. The nine-month total reached $2.27 billion, versus $985 million in the same period last year. This cash came despite $545 million of quarterly capex, up 63% year over year. The company funds a large part of its capacity build with upfront customer payments. That cash is returned to customers as they buy their committed volumes. CFO Schlesinger said that, excluding maintenance spending, most capital is funded by these agreements. The cash flow guide explains the mechanics.
Glass and Solar are holding back.
Glass Innovations sales were $1.51 billion. That is a 3.5% decline year over year. Segment net income fell 10% to $328 million. Higher memory prices hurt demand for TVs, notebooks and smartphones. In the quarter, TV units fell 4%, while notebooks and handhelds fell about 20%. Corning is raising display glass prices starting in the fourth quarter, with the main impact expected in 2027. Solar sales rose 37% to $436 million. But the segment posted a $7 million net loss, versus a $30 million profit a year earlier. Wafer and module production is ramping more slowly than planned. U.S. trade action under Section 232 supports pricing and demand for domestically made solar products.
Why the stock stood still.
The stock is nearly flat versus the prior close. The intraday range runs from $121.75 to $128.48. Optical peers Coherent and Lumentum rose more strongly in premarket trading. Investors are focused on the financing and duration of AI infrastructure spending. On the earnings call, Weeks said every customer request so far has been for more of the new products, faster and broader. Customer agreements share the capacity risk, but $2 billion of spending keeps the market cautious. The stock is still up 42.5% over the past year. However, it has lost about half its value since the summer peak. The average analyst target is $187.41, 47.2% above the current price. The earnings day guide helps separate which data moved the price.
Next quarter, watch one line.
Next quarter, one line is enough: Optical Communications' share of total sales. This quarter the share was 46.8%, up from 38.7% a year earlier. If it stays above 45%, the margin-expansion story holds. If it slips below, growth is getting stuck on weakness in Glass and Solar. The second checkpoint is $0.96, the low end of fourth-quarter EPS guidance. A result below that line would weaken the acceleration claim in the Springboard plan. In Solar, watch whether the loss closes. If the segment returns to profit, the company's margin goals arrive sooner. The CFO said a Solar margin above 20% would lift the corporate average significantly. Read together, these three measures show whether the acceleration is durable.
